Happy New Router!
« on: 18 April 2012, 20:37:34 »
Those that know me from the "other" place may know I've tested a good few routers in my time. I was browsing the Be forum recently and read that Be are making some network changes and are offering to replace routers for long-standing customers. as I have been with Be 5 years, I thought I should qualify!

I sent a support ticket on Thursday and my Be Box 2 (Technicolor TG582N) was delivered yesterday. Stats are as follows -

Link Information
Uptime:   0 days, 1:15:43
DSL Type:   ITU-T G.992.5
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:   1.395 / 18.421
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:   12,0 / 18,5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:   16,3 / 28,5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:   4,5 / 3,1

Previously I was running an O2 Wireless Box IV which has been dropping the connection a lot recently, the wireless kept dropping out and I was syncing at 17 Meg with a DS Att of 27, which is lower than the new router records.

Fingers crossed that this new router remains stable. I'll keep the O2 box, just in case although I'm not sure whether it will still work after the network changes and I can't upgrade the firmware as it's JTAG'd to O2.

Be let me keep the original Be Box so it's in the cupboard along with the 585, 2wire, DG834N (faulty) and O2 box  ;D

Yeah, that's the one...not really much of a beast though!  ;D It's about half the size of the TG587n. Who says size matters though?  8)

Technicolor = Speedtouch
 v nice...

your noise margin looks a bit low mind, i would keep an eye on that - did you lower that? if not then there is a noise presence on the line - I reckon you set it cos your getting 18.4Mb on a 28.5db line :)
Sky Broadband LLu ->  17,600k / 27.5db / 7.0db  = 15.1Mbps / 28ms

Hehe...Milo knows me well  ;)

Yeah, I have tweaked the margin down via Be's control panel (optimised for best speed and gaming mode on) but my line is usually quite stable at 3db. As I mentioned, the DS Att was recorded as 27db, this one records it as 28.5. The noise margin kept dipping on the old one though and it kept losing signal.

So far, touch wood, the new router seems very stable, The noise margin hasn't budged from 3db since yesterday and no loss of signal. The only negative seems to be the wireless speed and range doesn't seem as good but you can't have everything I suppose  ::)  :)

 ;D I don't suppose you have access to the latest firmware for the O2 IV KRW? I see someone on the O2 forum suggested they make it available for download but I can't find anything yet. If I could firmware upgrade the O2 box I would give it another try  ;)

Edit: It looks like the new firmware isn't too popular, maybe I will leave it for a while.

According to http://www.o2help.co.uk/router-upgrade-firmware/

IV latest is 8.4.2R which has on mine since I got it must be over 12months ago, I know Be have trialing new firmware, so has O2 but neither have release it yet as I understand that there are network changes to be done before the fw release

Oh, I thought O2 had run a firmware upgrade to v.8.4.3.K.BL and I think there has been a further one v.8.4.3.K?

From what I understand, the new Be Box 2 is supplied with the new firmware already installed so it's ready for the network changes..

Went O2 shop Free router is free at a cost of £50 and they reduce the monthly payment to give money back.

But as I'm on legacy monthly contract would have start a new contract, not worth losing unlimited status and gain traffic management.

thar how's the 582 looking on O2 forum there seems to be a few problems with it with wifi, connections
